Charlie Parker Jazz Festival
The Charlie Parker Jazz Festival annually assembles some of the finest musicians in the world who reflect Parker’s musical individuality and genius, to promote appreciation for this highly influential and world-renowned artist. The afternoon’s lineup features Randy Weston, Jerry Gonzalez and Fort Apache, jazz pianist, and singer Gretchen Parlato. “Film Is the Great Adventure,” a retrospective of the work of the late master, will unspool weekends through the end of the year. Screening as part of the theater’s ongoing “Weekend Classics” program, the series includes some 20 films, ranging from the early “Port of Call” (1948) through the 1950s features that brought him international renown—“Smiles of a Summer Night” (1955), “The Seventh Seal” (1957), “Wild Strawberries” (1957) and others—to late masterworks such as “Scenes from a Marriage” (1973) and his valedictory to filmmaking, “Fanny and Alexander” (1982), revived in its complete, uncut, original version. Steve Coogan, “Hamlet 2”
Actor/comedian/writer Steve Coogan discusses the making of his new movie, “Hamlet 2,” the comedy hit of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. In the movie, a failed actor-turned-worse-high-school-drama teacher (Coogan) rallies his Tucson, AZ high school students as he conceives and stages a politically incorrect musical sequel to Shakespeare’s famous drama. A Taste of the Village
The Village Alliance business improvement district will host the sixth annual Taste of the Village benefit for Washington Square Park in the park plaza, with international samplings from 18 Greenwich Village restaurants. Offering signature dishes, restaurants include Blue Hill, North Square, Otto Enoteca Pizzeria, SushiSamba 7, Café Spice, La Palapa Cocina Mexicana, 8th Street Winecellar, Knickerbocker Bar and Grill, and others.
