After 40 years of being closed to the public, officials reopened the High Bridge over the Harlem River to foot and bicycle traffic on Tuesday.
The bridge, built as a critical link carrying drinking water from the Croton Aqueduct system, was also a popular promenade after it was completed in 1864. But after it fell into disuse in the 1970s, the bridge connecting the Bronx and Manhattan was closed to the public.
In 2012, a major rehabilitation effort got underway to reopen it to the public.
