New York's first Wegmans will be located at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the 300-acre former military site turned industrial park, the Navy Yard confirmed on Wednesday. The Wegmens will be located at the abandoned Civil War-era Admirals Row, which runs along Flushing Ave. and Navy St. in DUMBO. Steiner Studios NYC, whose 25-acre film complex is nearby on the Navy Yard and is developing a media center at the abandoned Naval Annex, will develop the complex and pay for construction. According to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Wegmans will create more than 1,200 permanent jobs for the area. Wegmens itself will hire 450 people, including 150 full-time. The new supermarket will be 74,000 square feet, larger than the nearby Fairway in Red Hook. The new store is set to open in 2017. "This is a tremendous win for this community and for the people of New York City," Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement.
