Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth return for ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’

It’s been 12 long years since we’ve last seen the hapless, romantically challenged, weight obsessed Bridget Jones.

In that time, all things considered, Bridget (Renée Zellweger) seems pretty well put together now at age 43, with a good job as a TV producer and her weight under control, though she still ends up celebrating her birthday alone.

It’s a film that’s made for the fans. It’s got its funny moments, the characters are likable and it delivers a lot of the same beats.

The basic premise of these movies has Bridget being fought over by two guys — stodgy Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) and flashy Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) in 2001’s “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and 2004’s “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.”

In “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” our heroine is being chased by old love Mark and new love Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey), a slick and sweet mogul who founded an online dating service. He and Bridget have a meet cute at a music festival where he rescues her from a slip in the mud.

Thanks to a pair of romps with each guy — not to mention some condoms that might have first appeared in “Edge of Reason” all those years ago — she is soon with child. But who’s the daddy? After 123 minutes, you’ll get your answer.

But does it really matter?

That’s the biggest issue here: The drama is missing. The big question is whether this version of Bridget — i.e. one who is more together in her life, which is a lot less interesting and entertaining — will pick between the handsome, reserved British guy who clearly cares deeply for her, or the handsome, affable American guy who clearly cares deeply for her. The biggest difference might be their accent.

There’s no fear of a bad situation, short of whether she’ll be able to make it to the hospital in time to give birth.
