A 56-year-old man was shot in the head and killed Thursday night following a dispute in front of a deli in the Bronx, the first of two shootings in the borough’s Morrisania neighborhood within a five-hour span, police said.
Officers from the 42nd Precinct responded to a 911 call just before 9:30 p.m. on June 12, reporting a person shot outside 621 East 169th Street. They found the man unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head.
Emergency responders transported him to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.
Authorities believe a dispute preceded the fatal shooting, though the motive remains unclear. The suspected gunman fled the scene, and no arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing.
Just hours later, around 2:36 a.m. Friday, June 13, a 30-year-old man was shot in the left arm near a NYCHA complex at 1309 Washington Avenue, roughly half a mile from the first incident
Police said a group of individuals fled westbound after the shooting at Morris Houses, while the victim was taken to the same area hospital in a stable condition.
The exact number of suspects is unknown, and no arrests have been made, cops said. Ballistic evidence was recovered at the scene as police continue to investigate.
As of June 8, the 42nd Precinct has seen a 27% increase in shootings year-to-date, according to the latest NYPD data. The two back-to-back incidents on June 12 and 13 marked the 13th shooting and third homicide in the precinct so far this year.
