W.T.C. walk out

On Monday union concrete and cement workers stopped what they were doing and walked off the W.T.C. site. The move was part of a citywide work stoppage stemming from a contract dispute and the use of non-union workers. The workers have been laboring without a contract since July 1.

All concrete work stopped on 1 W.T.C. and throughout the site, but the National September 11 Memorial was spared. Laborers were directed by the Concrete Workers District Council to keep toiling away at the memorial so it will be finished by the tenth anniversary.

Roughly 200 workers walked off the site and did not return on Tuesday. Sources said the sticking point is a 20 percent pay cut and that a full strike has not yet been discussed.

Port Authority Spokesperson Steve Coleman stated the walkoff “will have no impact on construction of the 9/11 Memorial, which remains on track… and minimal impacts on the site’s other projects.”
