People will have the chance to comment on the programming for the World Trade Center site’s proposed Memorial Museum at two upcoming forums in Lower Manhattan.
The first workshop will be on Mon., Sept. 19 and at press time, there was still space available. The second will be on Tues., Oct. 11. Both will be at 6 p.m. in the Woolworth Building, 15 Barclay St., at New York University’s continuing education center. Seats are free, but advanced reservations are required either by calling 212-253-2727, ext. 317 or by visiting www.renewnyc.com or www.civic-alliance.org.
The forums have been organized by two organizations leading the planning for the site and the memorial, the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. and the W.T.C. Memorial Foundation, and two post-9/11 groups that have led workshops and efforts to advance ground zero plans, the Civic Alliance and New York New Visions.
Officials are hoping the forums attract a mix of people interested in the site including relatives of 9/11 victims, Downtown residents and workers, W.T.C. recovery workers, and survivors. A similar presentation will be made at both forums and then participants will have the chance to break up into small groups to offer their views as to what they would like to see in the museum.
Space for the Memorial Museum is included in the Reflecting Absence memorial design by Michael Arad and Peter Walker. The museum will tell the stories of those killed and rescued on Sept. 11, 2001 and will include artifacts recovered from the site. The museum is separate from the International Freedom Center, a museum which under current plans, will be built adjacent to the memorial. Some family members have protested against the I.F.C. being near the memorial because it is dedicated to studying the struggle for freedom in general, rather than 9/11 specifically.
People who do not attend one of the forums can register their opinions at the L.M.D.C. Web site, www.renewnyc.com.
