All-Stars take field
Baseball’s biggest names will descend upon Citi Field on Tuesday night for the All-Star Game. The contest will have some hometown flair, as Mets ace pitcher Matt Harvey will start for the National League. If the American League finds itself clinging to a tight lead late, expect Yankees great Mariano Rivera, who is retiring after this season, to be given the save opportunity. New Yorkers told amNewYork they were excited to have the Midsummer Classic back in the Big Apple. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on Fox.
Heat bakes NYC again
The sweltering weather returns to the city Tuesday, with high temperatures expected to reach 96 in Manhattan. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory that extends into Wednesday night. Click here for information about air-conditioned cooling centers open around the city.
Mayoral hopefuls stump
On the mayoral campaign trail Tuesday, city Public Advocate Bill De Blasio will be among the elected officials on the steps of City Hall calling for an end to racial profiling; former city Comptroller Bill Thompson is expected to be endorsed by former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer; and John Catsimatidis will speak to the civic group The Common Good.
Willets businesses to stage rally
Employees and owners of automotive repair shops in Willets Point slated to close to make room for a redevelopment project have scheduled a protest for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Last year, the city’s Economic Development Corp. made a deal with two Manhattan-based developers, one of which is run by Mets owner Fred Wilpon, to create a site that includes a 200-room hotel and 30,000 square feet of retail space in the shadows of Citi Field.
Opera hits Central Park
Rising Metropolitan Opera stars Erin Morley, Isabel Leonard and Stephen Costello will belt arias and duets Tuesday night at Central Park’s SummerStage. The free show begins at 8 p.m.
