By ALBET AMATEAU | The public school kindergarten admission period for September 2012 for all city schools is from Jan. 9 to March 2, the city Department of Education announced last week.
Parents will be notified of kindergarten assignments between March 19 and March 23. The preregistration period is from March 26 to April 20.
All applications received by the March 2 application deadline will be considered at the same time, regardless of when during the application period they were submitted.
Families must submit a kindergarten application for each school, zoned or unzoned, for which the child is eligible. During the admissions period, parents should visit the schools for which they may file an application.
Zoned schools will give priority to students who live in the zone. Schools will make assignments according to the following priorities, in descending order from the highest to lowest:
1. Zoned students with a sibling who will be in grades 1 to 5 in the school in 2012-13;
2. All other zoned students;
3. Students in the school’s district but outside the school’s zone, with a sibling who will be in grades 1 to 5 in the school in 2012-13;
4. Students outside the school’s district with a sibling who will be in grades 1 to 5 in 2012-13;
5. All other students in the school’s district but outside the school’s zone;
6. All other students.
Parents must bring their child to the school they are applying for, along with the child’s immunization documents and birth certificate or passport.
In addition, parents must present two proofs of residence, which could be a residential utility bill issued within the previous 60 days; documentation or letter with letterhead from a federal, state or local government agency dated within the previous 60 days; an original lease agreement, deed or mortgage statement or current property tax bill for the residence; a water bill dated within the previous 60 days; or an official payroll document from an employer dated within the previous 60 days.
If available, the child’s latest report card or transcript and the child’s Individual Education Program (I.E.P.) and/or 504 Accommodation Plan must also be presented. A copy of the birth certificate of a child born in New York City may be ordered online through the city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene at the Office of Vital Records Web page.
