If selected by the city Department of Transportation’s e-scooter pilot program, Lime plans to hire 40 full-time employees in New York City.

The pilot program was announced after the New York City Council passed legislation approving the use of e-bikes and e-scooters. Lime announced it will work with the Center for Employment Opportunities and Bronxworks, to hire up to 40 full-time employees with an emphasis on NYCHA residents and formerly incarcerated New Yorkers if selected.

“New York is the greatest city in the world and its residents deserve a high-quality transportation service operated by people who know it’s communities best,” said Wayne Ting, CEO of Lime. “We’re eager to work with the Center for Employment Opportunities, Bronxworks and The Doe Fund to hire directly from the neighborhoods that the e-scooter pilot program will serve, and we’re committed to deliberately focusing these efforts on hiring persons living in NYCHA housing and those who are formerly incarcerated because we believe everyone deserves a second chance.”

Lime aims to hire New Yorkers with deep ties to their communities. The company has also hired from New York City communities in the past, including the Rockaways and Staten Island, during the DOT’s dockless e-bike pilot program.

The Center for Employment Opportunities, which works to provide job training and career development for the formerly incarcerated to help reduce recidivism, and Bronxworks, which helps Bronx individuals and families improve their economic well-being with job opportunities, training and other services, will help Lima hire the employees from traditionally underserved communities. Lime has also committed to not using gig economy labor in its New York City operations, instead opting to work with the Doe Fund to ensure that scooters are parked correctly.

The DOT’s pilot program is set to begin on March 1 and will operate in neighborhoods outside of Manhattan.
