Mugger takes shoes, Police Blotter, week of Dec. 25, 2014

Mugger takes shoes

A Tribeca man was robbed of his coat, shoes, wallet and cell phone in the Financial District on Fri., Dec. 19.

The 32-year-old man was walking down Nassau St. near Beekman St. at 1 p.m. when police say the thief approached him with both hands in his pocket. The mugger then lifted the left side of his jacket — with his hand inside the pocket — and said, “Give me your wallet.” The victim, thinking that the man had a gun, gave him his wallet and then his coat.

The thief wanted more, however, and then asked for the man’s shoes. He was then told to lay face down on the ground, police say, and the suspect fled. The thief got away with a $500 Brooks Brother blue wool coat, a BlackBerry worth $50, a $250 pair of Ferragamo shoes, a $50 wallet, credit cards and $20, for $870 total.

Police say that the man cancelled his credit cards in time and there were no unauthorized charges.

Punched once, robbed twice

A man was entering information on his work iPad when a thief came up to him, punched him in the face and snatched the device out of his hand last week in the Financial District.

Police say the 26-year-old man was at Hanover Square near Stone St. at 4:38 p.m. on Thurs., Dec. 18 when the first theft took place. But this tale of woe gets worse. After one thief stole the iPad and fled on Stone St., the man gave chase but immediately realized he had left his personal cell phone unattended on a ledge. Another thief stole his phone.

One thief got away with an iPad worth $400 and its $100 case. The other got a $600 iPhone with its $100 case.

Grand sweater thieves caught

Two teens working together snatched a sweater worth $1,680 from a Soho store on Wed., Dec. 17 — and were arrested the same day.

At 7:15 p.m., the two young men, both 17 and from Brooklyn, entered Pineda Covalin, a high-end clothing boutique at 107 Mercer St., grabbed the sweater and left. The whole operation took 5 minutes. Police say they conducted a canvass and found the teens with the stolen sweater.

Shoplifters’ week at Saint Laurent

Different shoplifters hit the Saint Laurent Paris store in Soho twice last week.

The first incident took place on Wed., Dec. 17 at 6:20 p.m., when a man entered the store and stole a $225 black card case holder, a $1,190 black and white striped sweater and a $1,790 black varsity jacket — for a total of $3, 205. Police say they are looking for a male, 25, who is 5’ 5” and a 120 pounds.

The second theft took place later that week on Fri., Dec. 19. A man came into the store around 7:30 p.m. and took a black bag, worth $2,750, from a display shelf and left. Police say that they are looking for a man who is 5’ 8” and 160 pounds. A 35-year-old male store employee reported both thefts.

iPhone sold & stolen

On Mon., Dec. 15, a Brooklyn man was texting on his iPhone in front of 160 Pearl St. in the Financial District when a man walked up to him, grabbed the $400 phone out of his hand and fled north on the street.

The incident took place at 11:45 a.m. and the man, 22, had just purchased the smart phone and had not installed a find my phone app.

Now find your wallet

The saying no good deed goes unpunished might be applicable in the case of a 21-year-old woman who tried to help another woman with directions — and got several items stolen from her purse.

Police say the woman had just gotten out of the Prince St. (N,Q,R) stop in Soho when the questioner, 25, asked for directions around 5 p.m. on Thurs., Dec. 18. While the victim checked her iPhone to look up the information, the who pretended to be lost took off west on Prince St. The victim, who lives in Chinatown, then noticed that her purse was open and her credit card, driver’s license and MetroCard were gone.

Burglar arrested

A suspect scaled a fire escape and entered a second floor window to break into a restaurant in the Financial District last week and stole $200 from the cash register.

The suspect got into Rockwell’s, at 105 Broad St., at 10 p.m. Tues., Dec. 16, about two hours after it had closed for the night.

Police say they arrested a 16-year-old man for the robbery three days later.

Is the thief a sommelier?

A thief who knows his wines well — or got really lucky — stole a bottle of Petrus, worth $3,500, from Tribeca Wine Merchants on Sat., Dec. 20.

Police say a man who looked to be in his 50s walked into the wine shop at 40 Hudson St. at 6 p.m., took the red wine off the shelf, hid it under his jacket and left.
