Polar Plunge: Frigid New Year’s Day swim in Coney Island

What would you do in the name of charity? Thousands — early registration numbers were at 3,600 — of New Yorkers spent New Year’s Day rushing into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean as part of the 115th annual Coney Island Polar Bear Club’s plunge.

The event, held Tuesday near the Coney Island Boardwalk and Stillwell Avenue, raised thousands of dollars for local community organizations, including the Alliance for Coney Island, Coney Island USA, the Coney Island History Project and the New York Aquarium, which is located in – you guessed it – Coney Island.

Put on your warmest sweater and scroll down for photos of the frigid festivities.
