East Village stabbing
Corey Capers, 31, of 605 F.D.R. Drive in the Baruch Houses was stabbed to death at 3 a.m. Sat., June 9, in front of 737 E. Fifth St. in the Lillian Wald Houses while trying to stop a fight between his aunt and her boyfriend. Capers was taken to Beth Israel Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The suspect, later identified as Carl Knox, 47, known as Abdul Hakim, a resident of the Wald Houses, fled.

Sal Medina, operator of a newsstand on Delancey St. near Columbia St., was surprised on Friday morning June 8 when a white livery car stopped in front of the stand and the driver got out and said that a pregnant woman from Queens in the backseat was giving birth. By the time the ambulance arrived, the first of twin girls had been born. The second baby made her debut later in Bellevue Hospital, but before the mother got to the delivery room, according to a CBS News report.
E. Sixth St. save
Police Emergency Service Unit officers saved a woman who was sitting on the ledge of her sixth-floor bedroom window at E. Sixth St. and Avenue D and threatening to jump at 12:30 p.m. Sat., June 9. Officers on the ground tried to calm down the disturbed woman, who was perched with her feet dangling out the window. E.S.U. officers broke into the woman’s apartment and pulled her inside.
Left fingerprints
Police arrested Wilfredo Lopez, 45, on Wed., June 6, for the burglary of an apartment at W. Fourth and W. 10th Sts. between May 21 and May 24. The resident of the apartment returned from a trip on May 24 to find the place ransacked and a laptop computer, jewelry and a pair of Gucci sunglasses missing. Lopez, convicted twice previously for burglary, was identified from fingerprints he left at the apartment, police said.
Hammer attack
An unknown assailant struck a woman, 39, on the head with a hammer around 7 a.m. Thurs., June 7, in front of the 55 E. Third St., the Catholic Worker’s Maryhouse. The victim, a frequent visitor to the women’s residence and drop-in center, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
E. 14th St. holdup
A robber with his hands in is pocket simulating a gun held up a Metro PCS store at 350 E. 14th St. around 7 p.m. Tues., June 5. The robber made off with $1,700, according to a New York Post item.
Boaters rescued
Police and Fire Department harbor units rescued seven boaters from the Village Community Boat House on Pier 40 from the Hudson River on Tues., June 5, when their craft was swept downriver and capsized after it smashed into Pier 25 at N. Moore St. The boaters were all wearing life preservers, and five of them who managed to cling to the pier were pulled to safety by a police unit. Two who were swept past the pier were rescued by the Fire Department harbor unit.
Medical assault
A man who works at the medical office at 185 Bleecker St. was accosted by a female acquaintance who walked into the place at 8:30 a.m. Mon., June 11, and demanded money that she claimed he owed her. When he refused, she grabbed a pen and stabbed him with it in the arms and the face, according to a police report. When police arrived, the suspect, Anastasia Kazalovsky, was throwing and breaking things in the office and resisted being handcuffed, police said.
Screaming, spitting
Police arrested Luis Morales, 21, in front of 108 Seventh Ave. South at Grove St. around 11:53 p.m. Thurs., June 7, for screaming profanities during a dispute and causing a crowd to gather. When police arrived, the suspect spit at the arresting officer and pushed and kicked to avoid restraint, police said.
Bad break
Police arrested Andrew Bradley, 26, in front of the Red Lion, 151 Bleecker St., at 4 a.m. Sat., June 9, for hitting and smashing the soundproof-glass entry door, valued at $1,500. He was charged with criminal mischief.
Wicked arrest
Police arrested Robert Richards, 27, inside Wicked Willy’s bar, 149 Bleecker St., around 1:05 a.m. Wed., June 6, and charged him with stealing a bag with an iPhone, a sweater and blouse and a wallet with credit cards from a woman patron of the bar.
Hack attack
Police charged cab driver Ibrar Hussain, 27, and his passenger, Matthew Eck, 23, with assaulting each other after a dispute in the cab at the corner of W. Fourth and W. 10th Sts. shortly after midnight on Tues., June 12. A woman passenger with Eck was also in the cab but was not charged in the incident.
Car stop
Police stopped a car with suspicious license plates on Christopher St. just west of Seventh Ave. South at 3:10 a.m. Sat., June 9, and arrested the driver, David Macklin, 20, who did not have a valid driver’s license or insurance and had fraudulent plates. Macklin was also wanted on a criminal warrant, police said.
