Over 100 swimmers competed in the Race for the River and Cove to Cove swims on Saturday. Kamel Tejeda, a 17-year-old from Dominican Republic won both races with a 36.09 minute-time for the Race to the River and 7:44 minutes for the Cove to Cove.
Race for the River covered 2.4 miles from Pier 62 to the North Cove in Battery Park City. Cove to Cove went a half-mile from South to North Cove.
In the Race for the River, second and third place overall went to Sean Hannan, 19, and Gilles Chalandon, 48. Rondi Davies, 35, Jennifer Hand and Kara Fichtorn, 24, were the top three in the women’s division.
In the Cove to Cove Swim, the second and third place overall went to Thayer Thompson, 30, and Chalandon. Three overall finishers in the women’s division were Stephanie Kubicek, 15, Maddalena Maustillo, 25, and Paola Espitia, 26.
Water temperature this year was 73-76 degrees compared to 70.3 last year.
Both races are organized annually and sponsored by the Manhattan Island Foundation, Hudson River Park Trust, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, Battery Park City Parks Conservancy and the Port Authority.
