Silver urges L.M.D.C. to fund
Hudson River Park construction
Assemblymember Sheldon Silver last week joined waterfront advocacy groups in calling on the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. to grant the Hudson River Park Trust $70 million to complete the Downtown segment of the five-mile-long park being built between Chambers and 59th Sts.
In an Aug. 7 letter to L.M.D.C. Chairperson John Whitehead, Silver strongly supported the Trust’s request for the funds to help complete Segment 3 of the park between Chambers and Clarkson Sts.
The Trust wants to use the money for the reconstruction of the 1,000-ft.-long Piers 25 and 26 on the Tribeca waterfront, including a new boathouse, an estuary museum and passive recreation areas.
“The completion of this project is particularly important for the residents and workers of Lower Manhattan who were and continue to be at the center of the devastation caused by the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001,” said Silver.
Community Board 1, the Hudson River Park Advisory Council, and Friends of Hudson River Park have also called on the L.M.D.C. to grant the Trust’s funding request.
