Study shows lack of green space

If you’re searching for public space for recreational activity, best not to step foot in the South Street Seaport. The bustling Downtown attraction is equipped with two playgrounds and a dog run but has no recreational space for adults, according to a recent study conducted by Community Board 1.

As part of a Community District One facilities and amenities project, Heather Anderson, C.B. 1’s urban planning associate, recently took an inventory of the district’s publicly-owned park space, which revealed a huge disparity in the amount of found west and east of Broadway.

While Battery Park City, on the west side, is busting at the seams with 1.5 million square feet of sprawling, open space, the Seaport-Civic Center, on the east side, only has 619,000 square feet of greenery.

Tribeca has even less, with just over 250,000 square feet of park space, according to the study.
