For the 78th consecutive year, carolers will gather around a Christmas tree at the newly restored Washington Sq. Arch to celebrate the holiday season. The event this year, sponsored since its inception by the Washington Sq. Association, is on Mon., Dec. 6.
The caroling, open to everyone, conducted by Keith Borden and accompanied by the Rob Susman Brass Quartet, begins at 6 p.m. Complimentary songbooks will be available at the arch. At 6:30 p.m. the 45-foot-tall tree will be lit, after a countdown led by Santa Claus.
The tree, provided as always, by the Washington Sq. Association, will be delivered from Canaan, Vt., on Nov. 29 and will be lit between 4 p.m. and 1 a.m. from Dec. 6 until Jan. 7. It is the tallest tree in the history of the event, according to Peggy Friedman, a longtime member of the association.
On Christmas Eve at 5 p.m., Villagers and visitors, young and old, will again gather at the arch for caroling under Borden’s leadership with the Susman quartet. The Washington Sq. Association, one of the oldest existing civic groups in the city, was founded in1906.
