First responders, area residents and workers will have another chance to inquire about their legal rights pertaining to injuries they incurred on 9/11.
“Unfortunately, many questions have been unanswerable, even for the most knowledgeable experts,” according to an announcement of the event. So, the FealGood Foundation, along with The NYS Laborers Health and Safety Trust Fund and DC37, is conducting a special Town Hall meeting with newly-appointed Victims Compensation Fund Special Master, Sheila Birnbaum.
Birnbaum, a tort lawyer at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom, has previous experience mediating $500 million in law suits initiated by nearly 100 families of 9/11 victims. As V.C.F. administrator, she will play a major role in crafting the regulations for the $2.8 billion V.C.F. program and determine the amounts awarded to individuals in the form of compensation packages.
“Sheila Birnbaum brings extensive experience, credibility and unique insight to this important role,” said Attorney General Holder in a statement. “She has worked closely with, and won the trust of, the families of 9/11 victims with whom she worked. I know that under her direction, the fund will be administered in a manner that is sensitive and fair to those who have suffered so much from the September 11th attacks.”
The Town Hall will be held on Wed., June 29th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the United Federation of Teachers union office on the second floor of 52 Broadway. In the meantime, individuals may submit questions on FealGood’s website, www.fealgoodfoundation.com, by filling out a questionnaire on the top left-hand side of the page. Officials urge stakeholders to submit their questions prior to Mon., June 27, so they may be addressed at the Town Hall meeting.
