Transit Sam, week of April 2, 2015: Easter & Passover traffic

Thurs., April 2 – Wed. April 8
ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE SUSPENDED THURSDAY, FRIDAY, AND SATURDAY.

Traffic will be lighter on Holy Thursday and Good Friday but by Friday afternoon traffic will build at all Lower Manhattan crossings as Jews and friends head to Seders around the metropolitan region.  Traffic starts coagulating at 3 p.m. but the rush is over early too by 6:30 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Closures ahead on the Brooklyn Bridge! All Manhattan-bound lanes will close 11 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday, and then again midnight Friday night to 7 a.m. Saturday. So end those Seders early! Expect extra traffic in the Battery Tunnel and on the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges, and West St., Canal St. and Delancey St. In the Lincoln Tunnel the New York-bound south tube will close 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. That’ll send some traffic south to the Holland Tunnel, where one New Jersey-bound and one New York-bound lane will close during the same hours. So: the Holland will be extra slow from New Jersey all the way onto Canal St.

On West St./Route 9A, one southbound lane will close between West Thames and Vesey Sts. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

The Stone St. pedestrian mall is back and will close Stone St. between Hanover Sq. and Broad St., and Mill Ln. between Stone and South Williams Sts. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day until November.

The Way of the Cross march over the Brooklyn Bridge 9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Friday won’t officially close any streets, but curb lanes and sidewalks will be jam-packed with pedestrians slowing down traffic as marchers pass by. Streets impacted include: Park Row between Brooklyn Bridge and Broadway, Broadway between Park Row and Cedar St., and Church St. between Cedar and Barclay St.

From the mailbag:

Dear Transit Sam,
My boyfriend was working in Lower Manhattan and got two expired muni meter tickets on his commercial van within the same hour. Both tickets were issued while he was parked in the same spot — he had never moved the van. My question is, can more than one ticket be issued for the same violation in one day?

Lynne, New York

Dear Lynne,
Yes, it is possible to be given multiple tickets for the same violation. There are no set rules on how many summonses you can receive for the same violation, although most judges will dismiss additional summonses if they were issued less than an hour apart. I suggest you plead guilty on the first, not guilty on the second and explain that you received both within an hour and paid the first one.
