Transit Sam Week of Feb. 4, 2016

Dates: Thurs., Feb. 4 – Wed., Feb. 10

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE SUSPENDED MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY

It’s that time again — Fashion Week is here and it’s already causing traffic troubles for lower Manhattan.

Watch out for slowdowns on Varick between Laight and Beach Sts. and on St. John’s Pl. between Beach and York Sts. A separate show will impact Exchange Pl. between Broad and William Sts., and Pine St. between Nassau and William Sts. The crowd of models, fashionistas, designers, and photographers might make you unfashionably late throughout the week. Be sure to follow me on Twitter @GridlockSam for traffic tips, demo alerts, and more.

Happy Lunar New Year on Monday! The Firecracker Ceremony and Cultural Festival will light up Sara Roosevelt Park 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, but other than some rubbernecking I’m not expecting traffic to be significantly impacted. The big New Year parade won’t be until Sunday (2/14) so be sure to check next week’s Transit Sam for more info.

The Golden Lion Club Parade will slowdown traffic 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday on Canal St. between Baxter and Mulberry Sts., Mulberry St. between Baxter and Worth Sts., and Worth St. between Chatham Sq. and Mulberry St.

Both Hudson River tunnels will be impacted by maintenance this coming week, causing late-night gridlock in the vicinity of the Holland Tunnel. In the Lincoln Tunnel, one New York-bound tube will be closed 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. This will send drivers south to the Holland Tunnel where one New York-bound lane and one New Jersey-bound lane will be closed during the same period. Expect late night delays and extra traffic on Canal and Varick Sts.

In the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, one tube will close Monday through Friday nights 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. One tube will also close 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday. During the closure, two lanes of traffic will remain in the open tube. Expect slowdowns.
