ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE IN EFFECT ALL WEEK
Friday, there will be a ticker–tape parade for the U.S. World Champion Women’s Soccer team —a great event for Downtown but not so great if you need to drive or even walk across Broadway 11 a.m. to noon. With Broadway closed all morning expect the West Side Highway and F.D.R. to be heavier than usual.
Getting crosstown below Chambers will be hard. Use the Battery Underpass to get crosstown rather than Battery Place itself which will shut down for a while.
Vive La France! The Bastille Day Block Party celebration next week will take over West Broadway, closing the road between White and Walker Sts. Tues., July 14 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. .
Another full closure ahead on the Brooklyn Bridge this weekend: all Manhattan-bound lanes will close midnight Friday to 5 a.m.Monday. That’ll send cars to the Battery Tunnel and Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges, and subsequently onto West, Canal, and Delancey Sts.
In the Lincoln Tunnel, one tube will close 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. This will send Manhattan-bound traffic down to the Holland Tunnel.
In the Holland Tunnel, one New York-bound lane and one New Jersey-bound lane will close 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday, slowing traffic. Expect delays into Canal St.
On West St./Route 9A, one southbound lane will close between Vesey and West Thames Sts. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday andFriday.
A Family Day celebration will close Clinton St. between Madison and Cherry Sts. 12:20 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The Old Timer’s Stick Ball Game will close Rutgers St. between Cherry and Madison Sts. 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.
The Downtown Independent Democrats Festival will close Lafayette St. between Canal and Leonard Sts. 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.Sunday.
The Coenties Slip Thursday Greenmarket will close Coenties Slip between Water and Pearl Sts. 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Thursday until November 19.
From the mailbag:
Dear Transit Sam,
It has infuriated me how the West Side Highway has effectively gone from three lanes to two lanes at the World Trade Center. Despite the subtle “No Standing” signs, taxis pull over and stop to pick up and discharge passengers. I even saw a cab stop in the middle lane to pick up some tourists running out into the road. The congestion has become unbearable. What’s going on with this?
Nancy, Lower Manhattan
Dear Nancy,
The southbound traffic leading into Liberty St. is backed up because of ongoing work dismantling a portion of the pedestrian bridge and returning the exit from the bridge directly onto Liberty St. where it was on 9/11. There are also construction vehicles entering the World Trade Center site, and a vehicle check point right in that area for all cars and trucks entering the World Trade Center so you have a perfect storm of sorts. The bridge work will wrap up this summer.
There are two N.Y.P.D. officers on scooters assigned to the area on weekdays, Monday through Friday, and at least one on weekends. I’ve asked them to pay attention to drivers stopping in the lane.
