Espaillat to Deliver State of the District Address
Representative Adriano Espaillat (D-Washington Heights, Sugar Hill) will be hosting his 2020 State of the District Address this Thursday.
At the event, Espaillat will be giving an overview of his legislative goals for New York’s 13th district and for the second session of the 116th Congress.
The event will take place on Thursday, Jan. 30 from 6-8 p.m. at I.S. 218 Salome Ureña School Auditorium, 4600 Broadway.
Nadler Releases Statement Apologizing for Missing Part of Impeachment Trial
Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-Manhattan, Brooklyn) released a statement on Sunday explaining that he would miss part of the Senate impeachment trial due to a family illness.
In December, shortly after the House voted on the Articles of Impeachment, Nadler’s wife was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Yesterday, he met with her doctors to discuss her treatment plan going forward.
“I am sorry to miss some of the Senate Impeachment Trial, which is of critical importance to our democracy,” said Nadler. “I plan to return to Washington late Monday and appreciate the support of my colleagues and staff as I take this time to be with my wife and begin the long fight against her cancer.”
Hoylman Announces Bill to Ban Law Enforcement Use of Facial Recognition Technology
Yesterday, State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Chelsea, Midtown) introduced new legislation to ban law enforcement from using facial recognition and other biometric surveillance technology.
Hoylman argued that such technology, in the hands of law enforcement, posts a serious threat to New Yorkers’ civil liberties. The State has uncovered several instances of law enforcement abusing the technology, including evidence that they have manipulated images and stored photos of minors.
“Facial recognition technology threatens to end every New Yorker’s ability to walk down the street anonymously,” said Hoylman. “In the wrong hands, this technology presents a chilling threat to our privacy and civil liberties – especially when evidence shows this technology is less accurate when used on people of color, and transgender, non-binary and non-conforming people. New York must take action to regulate this increasingly pervasive and dangerously powerful technology, before it’s too late.”
Gottfried to Host Health Insurance Enrollment Event
Assemblymember Richard Gottfried (D-Chelsea, Midtown) will be helping New Yorkers enroll in health plans via New York State of Health tomorrow.
The deadline to enroll in a health plan for 2020 via New York State of Health is Friday, Jan. 31. For all of Wednesday, health care navigators from GMHC will be at Gottfried’s district office, helping New Yorkers sign up. Appointments can be made by calling 212-807-7900, but walk-ins are also welcome.
The event will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Gottfried’s District Office, 214 West 29th St.
