New York Red Bulls forward Lewis Morgan has returned to full team training as he nears a return from knee surgery, head coach Sandro Schwarz disclosed on Tuesday.
It is uncertain if he will be available off the bench for Wednesday’s US Open Round of 16 clash against FC Dallas at Sports Illustrated Stadium, or if the club will wait one more match to make him available for Saturday’s MLS visit to DC United.
“It’s good to see him now in a very good spot,” Schwarz said. “Now we have to decide if it makes sense [Wednesday] to be an option, or maybe on Saturday. This is what we have to talk about as well with the whole medical staff, and then make a decision.”
Morgan has been out since late March after suffering the injury during team training ahead of the Red Bulls’ home opener on April 1. He was initially prescribed a six-week minimum timetable for a return.
His return would provide an immeasurable boost for a New York side that has been stuck in neutral for the majority of the first eight weeks of the season.
The Red Bulls followed up a 7-0 thrashing of the Los Angeles Galaxy in a rematch of the 2024 MLS Cup Final with two straight losses to Nashville and NYCFC.
Outside of that win over LA and a 4-1 win over the Colorado Switchbacks of the second-tier USL Championship in the US Open Cup Round of 32, the Red Bulls have scored just 13 goals in their 13 other matches.
Morgan scored 13 goals with seven assists in all competitions last season, which earned him MLS Comeback Player of the Year honors after a 2023 season that was derailed by a hip injury that required surgery.
He signed a two-year contract extension, which includes options for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, in February.
