Afterschool budget tight at I.S. 89

The afterschool program at I.S. 89 struggling to raise $30,000 needed to continue operating next year, Bob Townley, executive director for Manhattan Youth said.

“We’re not letting this program die,” Townley said.

The program is the only one of its kind serving teens in the area, he said. The program offers 25 activities including band, drama, sports and a newsletter and 120 students use it every day, the program’s director, Theseus Roche said. Sixty percent of the programs budget comes from a grant from The After-School Corporation, a non-profit organization, but Manhattan Youth is responsible for the rest.

They’ve already raised more than half of the $63,000 needed.
