Notable New Yorkers’ deaths in 2014

  • Hall of Fame broadcaster and former Yankee Jerry Coleman, 89, died on January 5. Coleman won four World Series titles with the Yankees, although he interrupted his baseball career to fight as a Marine pilot in World War II and the Korean War. He eventually became a broadcaster, and then began working for the Padres, and he spent more than 40 years working for the organization.

  • Frank Cashen, 88, who was responsible for transforming the Mets into the World Series-winning team in 1986, died on June 30.

  • Street photographer Arthur Leipzig, 96, died on December 5, 2014. An award-winning photographer, Leipzig captured everyday life in NYC. One of his most famous series focused on children at play in NYC playgrounds.

  • Sy Berger, the designer of the modern baseball card, died at 91 on December 14. Born and raised in New York, Berger was employed by the Brooklyn-based Topps company for over 50 years--turning it into one of the most important creators of baseball cards.
