Champagne Papi? More like Matcha Papi.
Drake has invested in the New York City-based café chain and bottled matcha retailer MatchaBar.
“We feel Drake not only embodies the entrepreneurial spirit of our brand, but also our company’s ethos: ‘good things come to those who hustle,’ ” company co-founder Graham Fortgang said in a news release announcing the entertainer’s investment Wednesday.
With enemies “tryna drain [him] of [his] energy,” the Canadian rapper may just be the ideal matcha consumer: a bottle of the coffee alternative, made from powdered green tea, contains the caffeine equivalent to a shot of espresso, according to Fortgang. The difference, he claims, is that energy is released over a three- or four-hour period, instead of all at once.
Drake’s contribution comes as the company prepares to launch a new bottled product, scheduled to hit shelves at Whole Foods stores across the country in September.
MatchaBar currently operates two cafés, one in Chelsea and one in Los Angeles. It opened its first flagship store in Williamsburg in 2014, importing powder from Nishio, Japan.
By 2015, matcha madness had tinted lattes, soft serve, macarons, doughnuts and other treats across New York City in leafy shades.
