Lifestyle The best freebies in NYC: free wine, blowouts and more! By MELISSA KRAVITZ Updated September 23, 2015 4:19 PM Print Share fbShare Tweet Email Living in NYC adds up. Rent, MetroCards, food, entertainment... you get it. While the city isn't known for cutting anyone a good deal, there are still plenty of excellent things to do, taste and see that won't cost you a cent. You already know plenty of free spots to snag Wi-Fi and hang out, but here are some freebies actually worth paying for! Catch us talking about New York's greatest freebies on Monday, Sept. 28 at 12:30 p.m. on WNBC's "New York Live" on Channel 4. Studio tapings at NBC Photo Credit: Paul Drinkwater / NBC via Getty Images Sure, watching the "Today" show, "The Tonight Show" and "SNL" from home is free (well, not including the cost of cable), but attending a live taping is a quintessential part of being a New Yorker. If you weren't lucky enough to win the free online ticket lottery, take the day off work and wait in line for standby tickets to be part of a live studio audience! Late-night hosts also rehearse and test their monologues before the taping, and day-of tickets are available daily to witness these otherwise unseen rehearsals. Get all the details at NBC.com. FREE tours of Central Park Photo Credit: Yeong-Ung Yang Sure, you've been to Central Park more than the cast of "Friends" hung out at Central Perk, but do you really know the history of Manhattan's largest green space? Learn about the secret gems, lesser-known folklore and your new favorite picnic spot with FREE tours led by the Central Park Conservancy. Tour upper Central Park, iconic movie spots and more, all for free. Check out centralparknyc.org for meeting places and times for guided tours or just download the Central Park app and guide yourself. FREE blowouts and cuts at bumble & bumble university Personal maintenance doesn't come cheap in the big city. Rather than having your Craigslist roommate trim your bangs in your kitchen/bathroom, consider going upscale at Bumble and Bumble. The famous salon has a school for professional stylists at their Meatpacking location; any hair models who are pre-approved at an open call can get a totally free cut, blowout or style during class. Don't even reach for your wallet -- tipping isn't allowed! Check out bbumodelproject.com FREE live drama at NYC Night Court Photo Credit: FLICKR / rhodamine If you're a "Law & Order" buff, this attraction takes you away from the screen and into the real action of criminal law. While legal trial isn't exactly a spectator sport, the Manhattan Criminal Court has been known to attract quite an audience -- and let's just say the most interesting cases get tried after dark. Open until 1 a.m. at 100 Center St., if you catch a good case, this could be better than a night of Netflix -- just don't live tweet what you witness! FREE books at Mini Librarys Photo Credit: Melissa Kravitz You can certainly borrow a free book from any borough's branch libraries, but if you want some pages to keep, search for a Mini Library in your neighborhood. Urban Librarians Unite is behind the free boxes that stand along with some of the city's finest free newspapers. Leave your last book behind and grab a new read donated by a neighbor. Little Free Library is another organization with notably stylish boxes that also organize an anonymous book swap. FREE cultural events at McNally Jackson Photo Credit: Facebook / McNally Jackson Is there any better way to impress a New Yorker than casually mention that you spent last night at a debut/panel/lecture? No, there is not. SoHo's McNally Jackson (52 Prince St.) hosts a nightly rotation of authors, poets, cultural critics and more in various talks, signings and writing nights, sometimes with free wine! All you have to do is show up. FREE skincare products at Kiehl's Photo Credit: Kiehl's Get your skin ready for spring by stopping into one of Kiehl's seven NYC stores and get a complimentary skin consultation. Each short appointment is followed by a slew of free samples to test out what products are right for you. FREE WINE at Eataly Photo Credit: FLICKR / jakiepic We're letting you in on a little secret: You can sip free wine at Eataly almost any night of the week! Local and Italian winemakers, importers and enthusiasts open select bottles and host completely free tastings in Eataly's wine store almost every night! FREE boat ride on the Staten Island Ferry Photo Credit: FLICKR / clearrants You don't even need a MetroCard for this method of public transit. And you don't even need to visit Staten Island. Board the iconic ferry any time of the day or night at the bottom of Manhattan, take in the gorgeous skyline views, take a few selfies and turn around at the Staten Island terminal. And don't forget to look out for the Statue of Liberty! Coffee and other libations are also sold on board. FREE tours at Brooklyn Brewery Photo Credit: Brooklyn Brewery OK, so the beer isn't free (unless you're super-nice to the ticket takers), but wait in line for a timed 30-minute tour of the Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg -- totally free! The scent of beer is complimentary, too. FREE food... everywhere! Photo Credit: FLICKR / Robyn Lee While most of NYC's best free food deals come with some type of purchase, you're still getting a pretty good deal!
