World Toilet Day 2015: How to celebrate at home and in NYC

More than 2.5 billion people do not have access to basic toilets, and approximately 940 million people are left to defecate in public. Global Citizen, the organization responsible for the Global Citizen Festival, is dedicated to addressing such global issues in collaboration with the United Nations’ global goals for sustainable development to help rid the world of extreme poverty by 2030.

Michael Sheldrick, head of global policy and advocacy for the Global Poverty Project, said a major health risk that stems from open defecation is the spread of diarrhea-related diseases. “These are the most common cause of childhood illnesses,” he said. “And they’re preventable.”
