A bicyclist was struck and killed by a commercial truck driver in Soho Thursday morning, authorities reported.
According to police sources, a male cyclist was riding Westbound near the intersection of Broome and Centre Streets at around 10:13 a.m. on May 1.
Law enforcement sources reported that the unidentified bike rider initially struck a van’s open door, which sent him hurtling under the crushing wheels of a commercial truck being driven through the intersection.
Eyewitnesses described the scramble of first responders to save the bicyclist’s life moments later.
“I saw a body on the ground, and then the fire people were trying to revive him. It didn’t look good,” an eyewitness who gave his name as Paul told amNewYork. “I saw them trying to revive the guy, and they ripped his shirt off, and it was terrible.”
The bicyclist rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not yet released his identity.
Meanwhile, the male truck driver remained at the scene following the collision. So far, no charges have been filed against the individual.
The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is looking into the matter.
