Overall crime continued to drop in NYC for the seventh straight month, even though murders, shootings, and subway crime increased in April, according to NYPD statistics released Wednesday.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that overall index crime fell in April by 3% when compared to the same month in 2024. Robbery reportedly dropped by 13.5% (1,170 vs. 1,352) while burglary declined by 9.6% (954 vs. 1,055), and grand larceny fell by 4% (3,726 vs. 3,881).

Cops say there were three more murders last month than in the same time in 2024, with 28 people being slain compared to 25 last year. Overall, however, murders are down 24% since the start of the year.

Likewise, there were 13 more shooting incidents (73 vs. 60) and 17 more shooting victims (86 vs. 69) compared to April 2024.

“Crime is down for the seventh month in a row, and that’s the direct result of the strategies we’ve put in place and the tireless work of the men and women of the NYPD,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on May 7, 2025. “But even with that progress, we aren’t satisfied.”Photo by Lloyd Mitchell

“Crime is down for the seventh month in a row, and that’s the direct result of the strategies we’ve put in place and the tireless work of the men and women of the NYPD,” Tisch said. “But even with that progress, we aren’t satisfied — there is always more we can do to reduce crime and ensure that New Yorkers feel safe. Next week, we’re rolling out our summer violence plan to confront these challenges head-on and continue the work to keep crime down across the city.”

In addition to traditional enforcement, the top cop also championed the launch of the department’s Quality of Life Division, also known as “Q teams.”

Since hitting the streets last month, she said the teams have issued more than 2,400 summonses, made 132 arrests, and seized 91 mopeds, 17 e-bikes, and 352 vehicles tied to chronic complaints when responding to illegal mopeds, abandoned vehicles, smoke shops, and encampments.

Below ground, crime rose in the subways last month by 7.8% (152 vs. 141). There were 152 acts of lawlessness last month compared to 141 last year. Police say this uptick was mostly driven by robbery in felony assault.

The subway played host in April to one of the most stomach-churning crimes in years when 44 year-old Felix Rojas was cuffed for allegedly raping a corpse on a Manhattan train.

Last month, the NYPD said it also worked with federal, state, and local partners to take down members of the violent gang Tren de Aragua, infamous for sex trafficking, drug distribution, firearms offenses, and more, resulting in 27 arrests.

Additionally, police say they’ve removed 339 illegal firearms across all five boroughs.
