Veterans muster at V.A. Hospital protest
City Councilmember Margarita Lopez, left, and U.S. Representative Carolyn Maloney joined more than 100 veterans in a rally at the Veterans Affairs Hospital on 23rd St. and First Ave. on Oct. 7, calling on the V.A. to drop reorganization plans that could lead to the closing the hospital. Council Speaker Gifford Miller, Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum and Dr. Andrew Brotman, vice dean for clinical and hospital affairs at New York University School of Medicine, also spoke against the proposal to move all inpatient care from the 320-bed First Ave. hospital to the V.A. Hospital in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Two committees of the V.A. have also issued reports saying that elimination of services from the Manhattan hospital would create a hardship for many veterans.
