A saint of the people

Peruvian parishioners paraded from St. Brigid’s Church at Seventh St. and Avenue B through the streets of the East Village in celebration of St. Martin de Porres last weekend. The illegitimate son of a Spanish nobleman and a young freed slave, de Porres grew up in poverty. He learned medicine from a barber that allowed him to help the sick and later joined the Dominican order.
