On May Day in Tompkins Sq. Park, after Jerry the Peddler’s rave was over, the East Village brass unit Hungry March Band showed up and kept the crowd dancing. Some Hula Hoop specialists showed their stuff, as well. Eventually the band left and the No Police State Coalition took over. Right away, a police lieutenant instructed the coalition they could not give speeches using amplified sound without a sound permit. The man in the photo above reportedly responded that his First Amendment right to free speech was being denied him, since speaking without the bullhorn to assist him would strain his voice, and that the next day his free speech rights would be denied him again because he would be to hoarse to speak. Some people in the crowd took the side of N.P.S.C.
