Board 2 won’t meet on M.L.K. Day

Community Board 2 unanimously voted last week to amend its bylaws so that no board meetings will be held on New York State-recognized national holidays. The decision puts to rest the controversy over the board’s Landmarks Committee having traditionally held its January meeting on the third Monday of the month, or Martin Luther King Day, which is among the dates on which the board is now forbidden to meet. Last month, Shirley Smith, an African-American member of the board who is on the Landmarks Committee, had threatened to resign unless the board insured that meetings would not be held on King Day.
