A mother is being questioned after her two young daughters died in a fire that was sparked by burning incense at their Bronx apartment building Wednesday evening, police said.
Police and firefighters were called to the Butler Houses at 1368 Webster Ave. at around 6:30 p.m. Officers who arrived on the scene found apartment 3F in flames, police said.
Two girls – 18-month-old Amanda Jabie and 2-year-old Jannubi Jabie – were pulled from the fire and rushed to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said.
It remains unclear where the mother was when the fire broke out.
An FDNY spokesman said six other residents were injured in the fire as well as three firefighters. All of their injuries were minor, the FDNY said.
There were no working smoke detectors, according to the FDNY.
The medical examiner’s office will determine the cause of death for the two girls.
