Chelsea Community Church, a nondenominational congregation that worships at St. Peter’s Church, will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Sun. Nov. 6 at 11:45 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, 346 West 20th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues.
Reverend Dr. Karen L. Zeigler, of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Churches, will be the guest speaker at the Nov. 6 anniversary. Reverend Zeigler is a former pastoral counselor at Chelsea Community Church and has often returned to speak at services.
Founded by the late Paul Gay, a Chelsea resident and real estate broker, Chelsea Community Church was organized entirely by its lay members with no denominational affiliation or fixed creed.
The congregation, whose members come from backgrounds of various faiths or no faith, has no regular minister, but guest speakers, and sometimes members themselves, address the Sunday services. A pastoral counselor preaches every six weeks.
The congregation is known for its Candlelight Carol Service held just before Christmas, featuring a choir, congregational carol singing and a recitation of “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” by Clement Clark Moore.
