New York University is sponsoring a free lecture series, “The History of Greenwich Village,” next month. On May 4, Luther Harris, author of “Around Washington Square: An Illustrated History of Washington Square,” will talk on “Culture and Counterculture.” On May 11, Mossette Broderick, associate architecture professor, will discuss architectural styles of the 19th century in “Innovation and Change at Washington Square.” Emily Kies Folpe, author of “It Happened in Washington Square,” will give a talk on May 18 entitled “A Historic Overview of the Village.” Marvin Taylor, director of N.Y.U.’s Fales Library, on May 25 will give a slideshow presentation, “Downtown: New York’s Ultimate Art Scene,” covering the era from 1974 to the present, and featuring Fales’ extensive collection of photos of the punk scene, postmodern dance and transgressive film and fiction. All lectures will be held in the Kimmel Center, 60 Washington Sq. S., Room 405, at 6:30 p.m. No RSVP is required but photo ID is needed to enter the building. Historic photographs and artifacts will also be exhibited in the ground-floor windows of N.Y.U’s Kimmel Center on LaGuardia Pl. during May.
