The Lower Eastside Girls Club benefits greatly from volunteers who share their experience and expertise from the many fields in which they work. The club’s daylong Girls Congress of the Lower East Side on April 8 celebrated female leadership, with workshops, performances, speakers and activism. All the women leading seminars were volunteers. Above, in the seminar “Media Madness,” Sheila Rothenberg, of the Institute for Labor and the Community Girls’ Project, showed an example of a magazine ad that she said objectifies and stereotypes women. The girls later made their own ad focusing on product content. Below, Terri Collins from Project Reach led a seminar called “Discrimination and Diversity.”
