Earlier this month, the day after President Bush vetoed a bill to limit funding of the Iraq war and set a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. troops, more than 100 protesters gathered in Union Square. Holding signs, they chanted, “Bush wants a veto. He can go.” East Villager Michelle Barish, whose 21-year-old brother Jonathan is an Army specialist and part of the recent troop surge into Baghdad, said of the war, “It’s been disastrous for my family. They keep trying to get him to re-enlist. His service is up in ’08 and now they’re telling him that if he doesn’t re-enlist, they can change his job to an infantryman,” which would put him right in harm’s way.
