The Historic Districts Council’s sixth annual Grassroots Preservation Awards event on May 12 will honor Peter Levenson, developer and architect of the 1907 Cass Gilbert-designed building at 90 West St., severely damaged in the World Trade Center attack.
The council will also confer the Mickey Murphy Award for Lifetime achievement on Doris Diether, a contributor to Downtown Express and longtime member of Community Board 2 who has fought for appropriate zoning in Historic Districts.
The council will honor a total of nine individuals and organizations that have contributed to historic preservation at the 6 p.m. May 12 event at the historic St. Mark’s-in-the-Bowery Church on Second Ave. at E. 10th St.
Levenson is being cited for his vision in restoring 90 West St. to its original condition and converting the landmarked building from office to residential use after it was devastated on Sept. 11,2001.
Diether, who also works as a zoning consultant, is being honored for working tirelessly to protect landmarks in historic areas by appropriate zoning. She is also a guest lecturer at the Municipal Art Society where she gives classes on “Decoding Zoning in New York City.”
