The corner of Horatio and Washington Sts. is a busy intersection that has raised safety concerns for years. When the neighborhood became increasingly hip and the Meatpacking District became a nighttime destination, an influx of traffic flowed onto the street and the lack of a stop sign went from being a complaint to an essential concern for the safety of residents and visitors alike.

Jason Diaz, a block resident and father, created a grassroots campaign to petition for a stop sign. He designed a Web site, testified at community board meetings, met with the block association and created a petition.

The ribbon cutting for the new stop sign took place on Tues. Feb. 7. The birth of the stop sign coincided with the birthday of Diaz’s 1-year-old daughter, Sydney. Traffic came to a halt on the corner of Horatio and Washington Sts. as residents celebrated the all-way stop sign.
