How to help get out the vote, and make sure it counts

The election is less than a month away and most voter registration deadlines have passed. But a registered voter is not necessarily an active voter and many groups are now moving into the final phase of the registration drive: getting swing state voters to the polls. The following is a list of a few of the groups still organizing in the New York City area:

America Coming Together, which has a special New York office dedicated to hooking New Yorkers up with ACT’s different swing state operations. Contact their New York office at 212-261-4311 or visit www.actforvictory.org.

DrivingVotes.org is a grassroots anti-Bush organization. The Driving Votes Web site, www.DrivingVotes.org, helps out roadtrippers heading to swing states by providing them with materials to help them talk to voters about the election and get them to the polls.

Election Protection, a national nonpartisan coalition, will be training volunteer election monitors on Thurs., Oct. 7, at Fordham Law School. On Election Day, volunteers will be traveling to polling sites around the country with a history of irregularities or voting rights violations. Volunteers will distribute copies of the Voters’ Bill of Rights, make sure that polls open and close on time, prevent voter intimidation and assist voters with overcoming any barriers to voting that they encounter. For more information on this event, contact Kristin Connelly at krconnelly@fordham.edu. Visit www.electionprotection.org and www.impact2004.org for more information about Election Protection.

Leave No Voter Behind: MoveOn’s Neighbor-to-Neighbor Victory Drive plans to turn out 440,000 additional votes for Kerry from 10,000 neighborhoods. Visit https://www.moveonpac.org/lnvb/ for more information.

NARAL Pro-Choice New York conducts Saturday expeditions to Pennsylvania to register/canvass female voters there and host weekday evening phone-banking sessions. Contact them at 212-343-0114 or visit www.prochoiceny.org.

“Run Against Bush” is a grassroots campaign dedicated to removing George W. Bush from the White House. On Sat., Oct. 23, they are hosting the second Run Against Bush Day. Visit www.runagainstbush.org for more information.

Swing The State describes itself as an “anti-Bush travel agency.” Visit their Web site, www.swingthestate.org, for more information.
