In a stunning announcement, Governor James McGreevey of New Jersey, a Democrat — seen above on July 4, at the dedication of the cornerstone of the Freedom Tower at ground zero — announced his resignation on Aug. 12. “I am a gay American,” McGreevey declared, acknowledged having an extramarital affair with another man. McGreevy said he would step down on Nov. 15 after two and a half years in office. His announcement came amid reports that a former male aide had filed a lawsuit alleging sexual harassment.
