Jane Hawke Warwick, an editor who raised her family in their apartment above the Cherry Lane Theatre on Commerce St. with her husband, Arnold, died peacefully on Tues., Feb. 23. She was 78.
In declining health for about a year, she died at the home of her daughter, Liadain Smith, on Washington Square, and in the presence of her other daughter, Samantha Warwick, said her son, Matthew.
Raised in Smethport, Pa., she graduated from Goucher College, moved directly to the Village, and never left. She began her career at Mademoiselle in the fiction department where she became an editor, and continued to work in publishing throughout her life.
She married Arnold Warwick, manager of the Cherry Lane Theatre and later a real estate broker, 47 years ago and raised their three children in their apartment in the same building. She was an excellent cook and gave many lavish dinner parties there and in their house in East Hampton.
“She spent every summer in the East Hampton house on Cedar St., and was on Indian Wells Beach every sunny day,” her son said. “While she always wore her bikini, she preferred to enjoy the waves from the comfort of her beach chair.”
In addition to her husband, two daughters and son, seven grandchildren survive. A memorial is planned for Sat., March 6, at Commerce Restaurant on Commerce St.
