Cheerleaders from Stuyvesant High School practiced forming “extentions,” which they said is actually one of their less-difficult routines. They certainly made it look easy. The squad, ages 15 to 17, were practicing on their own near Stuyvesant to be ready for when school starts.

Bikes for Africa

Karen Overton, director of Recycle a Bike, right, and Christine Datz-Romero of the Lower East Side Ecology Center, collected bikes at a community drop-off point in Sara Delano Roosevelt Park last Saturday as part of an effort to send working and nonworking bikes to Ghana. By 2 p.m. they had collected about 10 bikes of various kinds plus many spare parts, like seats, wheels and tires. Afterwards, the bikes were added to a container in the parking lot at Norfolk and Delancey Sts., holding bikes that had already been donated, which was to be sent to the airport and flown to the African country. The hope is the bikes will offer Ghanaians better transportation options and better access to their farms, markets, jobs, education and healthcare.
