With summer drawing near the City Parks Department is looking for qualified swimmers, aged 16 plus, to become lifeguards. They are looking to fill posts at the 53 outdoor pools and 7 beaches within all five boroughs and train over 1100 lifeguards. An initial test will given testing the applicants swimming ability, where they are required to swim 50 yards in 35 seconds. There is also an eyesight examination, where a candidates vision must be 20:30 in one eye and 20:40 in the other, without corrective lenses. Those who pass the test will be able to participate in a free lifeguard training course being held through June. Candidates will be given another exam at the end of the training course, if passed, they will be paid for the time spent training and guaranteed a job. The starting wage is $10.08 for a 48-hour week. Employees are expected to work six days a week, weekends and holidays. For interested candidates, the free qualifying exam is being held on Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 59th Street Recreation Center, located at 533 West 59th St. from now until June. This season beaches open for swimming on Saturday, May 29 and pools open on Saturday June 26, 2004 through Labor Day.
