For the third year in a row, soup lovers recently faced off in The New Shul’s Golden Schmaltz Awards competition. Also known as the Souper Bowl, the culinary cookfest was held in the back room of Village restaurant on W. Ninth St. A total of 18 soups were entered in the competition. There were two judging divisions, chicken/matzo ball and everything else. Soups ranged from “Just the Broth,” “Jewish Penicillin” and “A Jew Married an Italian Wedding Soup” in the first category to “Steelers’ Broccoli and Cheese” and pistachio in the non-chicken/matzo division. Judges were chef/owners from three Village restaurants: Stephen Lyle, of Village restaurant; Akhtar Nawab, of Elletaria; and Marco Moreira, of 15 East. Above, first-place winners Stephen Fried, left, whose entry was carrot ginger coconut curry soup, and Janice Moses, whose entry was “Jewish Penicillin,” flanking New Shul Assistant Rabbi Dan Ain.
