The former president of Poland, Lech Walesa, was in Union Square on Wed., Sept. 28, for a ribbon cutting for an exhibition, “Poland on the Front Page,” celebrating the 25th anniversary of Solidarity, the Polish labor movement that Walesa led to end Soviet domination of their country. In photo at left, Walesa, center, was joined by former Mayor Ed Koch, to his right, and Mayor Bloomberg, to his left, at the ribbon cutting. At right, Walesa stood next to a TIME cover from back when he was the magazine’s Man of the Year. The exhibition is currently mounted outside the southwest corner of Union Square Park, near the Gandhi statue. It includes newspaper front pages and magazine covers from “the Polish decade,” as well as photographs by Erazm Ciolek, and will be on display until Oct. 27.
