NYC warns of risk of brush fires from dry heat, gusting winds

A mix of dry heat and gusting winds is raising the risk of brush fires in New York City, particularly in the outer boroughs.

The Fire Department of New York and Office of Emergency Management issued a warning Monday to use caution lighting grills and throwing away used cigarettes, which are often the cause of unintended fires.

The National Weather Service issued what’s called a Red Flag warning for the city from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

New Yorkers who live near grasslands are most at risk, and are advised to take precautions.

Officials encourage homeowners to keep lawns watered, trim dead wood from trees and remove trash and debris. Flammable liquid should be stored inside away from dry areas.
