The man who shot an NYPD detective in the thigh in Brooklyn Friday has been charged with multiple counts of attempted murder and one count of robbery, police said Saturday.
Kelvin Stichel, 33, of East New York, is facing charges of attempted aggravated murder of a police officer, attempted murder in the second degree and robbery after firing six shots at officers and hitting one during a foot pursuit Friday morning, according to the NYPD.
The officers were sitting in an unmarked police car at about 6:30 a.m. Friday on Fulton Street, near Tompkins Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant when they recognized Stichel as the suspect in a domestic robbery involving a gun, NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said at a morning news conference Friday.
The officers followed Stichel, who walked onto Tompkins Avenue and then turned right on Decatur Street. They got out of the car and chased him on foot, the commissioner said.

After the officers identified themselves and told Stichel to show his hands, Stichel pulled out a gun and fired around six shots at them, hitting a detective in the right thigh, O’Neill said.
The detective, who belongs to the Brooklyn North Warrant Squad and has been with the NYPD for seven years, fired back, as did two other officers. Stichel was struck in the right forearm, according to police.
The alleged robber fled the scene, but was apprehended later Friday morning a few blocks away, O’Neill said. A gun was also recovered, he said.
The detective was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County and was expected to be OK as of Friday.
“He’s more concerned about his two partners than he was about himself,” O’Neill said. “He’s in great spirits … he’s a real tough guy.”
Stichel was taken to another hospital and was expected to survive.
“He has numerous prior arrests, including for assaulting a police officer,” O’Neill said.
Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke with the injured detective by phone, the commissioner added.
The attack came one day after the one-year anniversary of the death of detective Miosotis Familia, who was fatally shot while sitting in a mobile command unit with her partner last July and honored with a street renaming on Thursday.
